Red Alert – My First Time

I am convinced that a bold red lip paired with a winged black liner will never go out of style. It is one of my favorite looks because it’s so universally flattering – you just have to find the best red for you. The result is simple, elegant and feminine.

Do you remember the first time you made the bold move of wearing red? I remember mine very clearly. Memoirs of a Geisha had just come out, and I was taken by the red lipstick on Xiyi Zhang. I was 14, and I spent my allowance of $5 on a L’oreal lipstick. One day, I was feeling brave and decided to bring that loud red lipstick to school, and I distinctly remember applying it during class, with the same level of finesse that any of the boys would use to apply a chapstick. Needless to say, I did not look like the geisha I was trying to emulate. I had to acknowledge that I was still a girl, not yet a woman. 😉

Since then, I’m glad to say my lipstick skills have improved, and I can color within the lines! Still, I keep wearing red to special occasions because I like to pair it with winged liquid eyeliner, which is another story in and of itself. I believe these two are the most difficult tricks in the make up book, and pay much respect to those who wear on the reg.

Sometimes, I feel badly for all the boys who will never know what it’s like to rock a red lip. They’ll never experience the dare, the sophistication, the fun or the confidence that comes from the color red. They’ll never know what it means to WERK. But that’s a secret I’m happy to keep with the girl tribe. Our red lips are sealed.

P.S. Do you remember your first time with a bold lip? I want to hear about it 🙂

  1. Ohh, how classy! Love the red lips paired with the little black one 🙂
I already played around with red lipsticks and lipliners at kindergarten age, haha 😀 It was just for fun, though. During senior high I wore red lips during the weekends 🙂
I’d love to see you with a really dark lip, something like black cherry or a deep vampy red! Bet that would look amazing on you.
